Shaylene Caffey had an uncanny sense of direction as a young girl, often guiding her family on road trips. After joining the military at 17, she jumped at the chance to work with maps and became a terrain analyst. After a hip injury ended her military career, the mother of three went back to college at American Sentinel University to get her online degree in GIS, Geospatial Information Systems. Shaylene looks forward to further degrees and showing her children what is possible with hard work and dedication. “I want them to see that women can be strong and persevere,” she says. “And I want them to know that education is so important.” She talks about her journey, how important it is to follow your passion and not letting anyone stop you.

What an inspiring interview! Shaylene exemplifies that you can do anything you want regardless of your gender. Its great to see how more woman are working in the GIS industry and military. Every little girl should listen to this interview and learn that sky is the limit.
