USGBC Approved Compressed Straw Changes Green Building

[HTML1]
Stramit USA, introduces Compressed Agricultural Fiber (CAF) board made from recycled wheat straw for green housing and in support of US Green Building Council (USGBC) and LEED certification. Tim Evans joins us to share how CAF board, relatively new to the USA but old for Europe, improves dramatically upon straw bale construction adding multiple benefits beyond its negative carbon footprint. It’s:

  • non-toxic,
  • mold and pest resistant,
  • energy efficient,
  • highly sound absorbent,
  • nearly fireproof,
  • pre-sized boards facilitate a faster, cleaner construction process,
  • low overall construction expense due to limited waste, reduced building site hazard and landfill expense.

Plus, the straw is a rapidly renewable material that’s often tilled back into the earth or burned, creating an undesirable carbon event. Instead, Stramit purchases and uses this straw, creating a new, secondary cash crop for wheat farmers while removing the carbon event associated with removing the straw stubble and re-tilling the soil. In comparison with particle board and other commonly used construction materials, its purchase is cost neutral but less expensive when considering the above benefits.

She has developed and implemented international campaigns to launch high tech products and services and guided new business owners to successfully navigate the difficulties of growing a business.

Her life-long passion for helping others led her into nonprofit work for over a decade. Early on, she recognized the need for nonprofits to adapt to a rapidly changing world in which technology dominates and for-profit business practices are central to success. Impact investing in for-profits with a mission of social change such as the fight against extreme poverty is a blossoming business sector around the world. With the economic decline, it's clear that Wall Street requires change. Social impact investing addresses that need in a way that provides financial and social ROI.

As the Host of Socially Conscious Investing on WomensRadio, Robin's goal is to educate people about the growth of social impact investing and social venture. Interviews are conducted with socially conscious business experts including foundations and nonprofits, social venture investment firms, micro-loan organizations, investors, educators, authors and social entrepreneurs.

This show's mission is to help change the world through sustainable business practices that contribute to the economy, combat poverty, end hunger and provide better lives to all.

Twice, Robin has been recognized and received the highest honorary award that Rotary International gives, the Paul Harris Award, for service above self. Her community work has included developing local programs for disadvantaged populations such as foster children, troubled teens, and people with disabilities.

  1. It’s great to see that the USGBC are looking to other countries for inspiration. CAF board has been used in the UK for a while now and brings to the table all the benefits of straw bail construction without any of the drawbacks.

Great article Robin, I am going to curate it for my blog, providing full credit back to yourself
