Chris Gallucci is the Vice-President/Director of The Shambala Preserve. The Shambala Preserve is an exotic animal sanctuary founded and run by the classic actress Tippi Hedren, star of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. Tippi has been a guest on People of Distinction, and it’s a pleasure to have Chris on the show too.
Chris’ specialty for many years at Shambala was elephants. In fact, Chris has been affectionately referred to as “The Elephant Man“! Chris cared for two elephants named Timbo and Cora at Shambala, and he’s also authored some books on the topic too. Chris talks not only about the wonderful service Shambala is to animals, and to human beings too for that matter…but also sheds some insight into situations involving the abuse of these remarkable and sensitive animals.
Chris asks the question “is there another way to work with an elephant besides brutality and domination?” … And Chris answers it too, “yes, it’s called positive reinforcement! You reward the animal with a treat for doing something that you want it to do.” Sounds like life, people!
Check this out – Elephants are probably one of the most intelligent and emotional animals on the planet – in fact, get this – a full grown elephant has the mentality of an 8 year old child! Hah! That’s probably a couple of years higher than some of the “dumbos” out there who are abusing elephants!
