The wolf has enthralled humankind for millennia, as a creature to be both feared and admired. It is the focus of countless myths around the world, in cultures from the Ainu people of Japan to the Apache First Nation elders who worshiped the wolf. But what can the wolf do for us today? What can it tell us about who we are both individually as well as collectively, and how can we live better lives, using the Wisdom of the Wolf?
As Teo Alfero explains in his new book, The Wolf Connection: What Wolves Can Teach Us About Being Human, “Most people only see the wolf as an animal, as I once did. But the wolf has played a key role in human evolution, and we have lived in association with them for so long, that if we look carefully, there are many more ways to consider the being we call “wolf”. Our observations and interactions at Wolf Heart Ranch allow us to grok wolves as multi-faceted beings and also as inter-related ideas and archetypes in the human psyche. These experiences are validated by research in biology, genetics, ecology, behavioral sciences, anthropology, and mythology which demonstrates that wolves exist on numerous, subtle levels. The animals we see in the wild, hunting bison and deer, and those we care for at the ranch, who act as ambassadors in the human world, represent just two aspects, or realms of influence, of wolves. I see nine realms that can help us gain greater self-understanding, and remind us of the primal, wild freedom we still carry, dormant, deep within ourselves.
In today’s interview, wolf-dog sanctuary founder and shamanic practitioner Teo Alfero shares the profound knowledge that can be gleaned from these majestic creatures. Legends, behavioral science, and biological research all suggest that human beings picked up many of their key evolutionary traits—such as cooperative hunting and raising of their young, and their high degree of emotional intelligence and deep bonding—from wolves. Teo and his team at Wolf Heart Ranch conservatory have seen first-hand how wolves and wolf-dogs can shift people’s outlooks, empowering at-risk youth and benefiting people from all walks of life through their Wolf Therapy® program. Grounded in Teo’s years of working with wolves, as well as the findings of wolf biologists and the wisdom of First Nation elders, The Wolf Connection offers twelve Wolf Principles to awaken our intuition, live more authentically, and heal from past trauma. By integrating a myriad of sources – including inspiring stories from the Wolf Heart Ranch – Teo provides an understanding of wolves and the lessons they have to teach us, so you can harness their powerful and transformative insights in your own life.
