S.O.U.L. On Air Radio Ep. 4: “Summer of Unconditional Love: the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love”
S.O.U.L. On Air brings you an episode dedicated to that eponymous Summer of Love in 1967, and explores the events that led up to and influenced that sacred period in our history. Kip and Evan sit with legendary 60’s author and historian Dennis McNally to walk us through those pivotal moments in space and time. Dennis penned “Desolate Angel: Jack Kerouac, The Beat Generation, and America” and “Long Strange Trip: The Inside History of The Grateful Dead”, books that chronicled the life and times of these seminal figures of the Beat and Hippie scene. Dennis talks about the passing of the torch from the Beats to the 60’s generation, and how the Summer of LOVE influenced culture on topics ranging from healthy eating to human rights, to respect for nature and cannabis, and how that shift in consciousness that began more than fifty years ago is as relevant and needed now as it was then; perhaps even more so.
From S.O.U.L.’s “An Invitation to Action” short film:
San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury District. In 1967, lovers, dreamers, and the free-spirited came here to find kindred souls who shared their dream of unity. Looking back at after almost half a century, are the ideals that started the Love movement still relevant today? Beat Poet Allen Ginsberg called them “The Seekers”; youth looking for a better world than their parents knew. Isn’t the search itself something important for us to keep alive in our crazy 21st century world?
