Discovering Cenotes in the Mayan Underworld

Diving Cenotes Mexico on The Gathering Roadwith Elaine J. MastersIn the 1980’s, Nancy DeRosa ventured to the Riviera Maya area of Akumal, Mexico. As one of the first gringos to settle there, she and then-husband Tony, dove reefs and explored the underground river cavern systems, the Cenotes, in the jungles.

Today Nancy and her son, Antonio, lead Cenote tours through their Aquatech Dive Center and offer beach lodging at the Villas De Rosa. They talk about diving underground rivers, protecting the natural resources of the area and the sea turtles who nest there.
