In this show, Dr. Gracer will review the basic facts about the diagnosis and treatment of multiple sclerosis, a major cause of neurologic disability in younger people. He also interviews Jeffrey English, MD about a new medication for MS and then Barry Hendin (Left), MD about some of the new advances in the field.
More about Jeffrey B. English, MD: Dr. English has been interested in recovery from neurological injury since medical school. He was involved in a research project in medical school with peripheral nerve regeneration with nerve grafts. During his residency he performed two research projects, which were presented at International Meetings. One involved recovery after traumatic brain injury, while the other involved functional MRI in the recovery after Cerebellar Strokes.
Dr. English is currently the Director of Clinical Research at the MS Center of Atlanta and the Medical Director, Sports Concussion Institute at Atlanta. In addition to being a paid speaker and consultant for several pharmaceutical companies (including Teva Neurosciences, Biogen-Idec, EMD-Serono, Genzyme, Novartis, and Allergan), he is a well-known speaker on health care economics and the delivery of care to the multiple sclerosis population.
More about Barry Hendin, MD: Dr. Hendin is a Clinical Professor of Neurology at the University of Arizona and has been the chief of the Neurology Service at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital from 1979 to the present. Dr. Hendin is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Banner Health Services.
He has numerous publications in many areas of neurology. He has been elected as Teacher of the Year as well as being honored as one of Phoenix’s Top Docs on multiple occasions. Dr. Hendin lectures around the country on a number of subjects including multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and headache. He has also been extensively involved in clinical research for more than 20 years especially in emerging therapies in MS.
