Valerie Savage is founder of For Women’s Sake, an Austin, Texas-based counseling facility that focuses on women suffering from disordered eating, stress/anxiety, and depression.
It is estimated that 8 million Americans have an eating disorder, with 1 million of those being males. And although eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, only 1 in 10 people currently receive treatment. Valerie joins Keeping Up with Gen Y to talk about how Gen Y suffering from eating disorders can be taught healthy coping mechanisms for when they are overwhelmed with the pressures of college or first jobs. She also discusses the role of the media and Internet in distorting real body images and how family can reinforce positive self-identities.
