Hassina Sherjan, an Afghan woman who has returned to Afghanistan to help build peace through education and building jobs, shares her work and perspective. This month of October 2012, she is in Washington DC to receive an award from The International Alliance for Women (TIAW) for her work building schools and a home decor business Boumi.com that simultaneously preserves a national art of embroidery and provides jobs.
Aid Afghanistan for Education has been building schools since 1999 for both women and men. Hassina explains that if the men are not given an equal opportunity for education as women, it not only breeds jealousy but also leaves the young men vulnerable to being recruited by terrorists.
