Priya Ramamoorthy (Image 1–Far Left) and Maanasa Nathan (Image 2), along with two other young ladies, Kavya Ramamoorthy (Image 3) and Smrithi Mahadevan (Image 4–Far Right), are a team of teenage girls from Austin, Texas who placed first in the nation at the 2012 Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest. For this contest, these four girls put together a website called “Title IX: Empowerment through Education” to address the contest theme: “Revolution, Reaction and Reform in History.” Title IX, the federal law passed in 1972, mandates equal educational opportunities for both boys and girls, and in the 40 years since it was passed, it has reformed the landscape of higher education in the United States, empowering girls to achieve their dreams to be doctors, engineers, athletes and more. Priya and Maanasa join Speak Up! to talk more about how their group of girls became interested in Title IX and what their team hopes to accomplish with the knowledge they have gained through their research.
