In this show Dr. Gracer interviews Ronald Caputo, MD a cardiologist and researcher, about the use of stents to open blocked coronary arteries, and in particular their use in diabetics.
Stents are tiny mesh tubes that are placed in the area of blockage. The problem with diabetics who have stents is that these areas commonly re-narrow, causing heart attacks and further symptoms. Stents are now available which have built in medication that markedly decreases this problem by up to 50%.
Dr. Gracer also reviews the use of stents and the overall increased cardiac risks that diabetics face.
