Hassina Sherjan, founder of AidAfghanistan.org and AidAfghanistanForEducation.org, has been building classrooms in Afghanistan since 1998. Education in Afghanistan is key to ending terrorism and rebuilding its economy. With a 90% lack of literacy in the country and 3 generations of conflict, the challenge is great. Plus the Afghanistan government, although supportive of Hassina’s work, still has old laws that prevent people over 10 years old from starting school.
In addition to education, creating jobs in Afghanistan is equally important to fighting terrorism and restoring a healthy economy. Hassina has established a home decor enterprise, Boumi.com, designed to create jobs and to preserve the Afghanistan culture and its beautiful embroidery. A collaboration with Butterfly Works in Holland resulted in the design and creation of CraftingPeace.com, a collection of beautiful, embroidered birds of peace.
