March is National Women’s History Month, and March 8 is International Women’s Day. In celebration of the theme, Education and Empowerment, Ms. Judy Patrick, the President and CEO of the Women’s Foundation of California, joins our show.
Addressing the disparity in funding for women’s and girls’ issues, the Women’s Foundation of California has awarded over $30 million in grants and assistance to over 1,200 community-based organizations in each region of the state since its formation in 1979. These programs help women including single moms, women leaving prison, women weathering the impact of the recession and more. A large part of the Foundation’s work is within the political system assuring that legislation addresses the issues impacting women. Listen to hear how.
Judy has been involved with women’s issues most of her career. She led the Foundation’s advocacy and policy change work, including the development of the groundbreaking Women’s Policy Institute. Prior to her work at the Foundation, she was director of Girls Count in Colorado, a nonprofit focused on changing systems that impact girls’ educational achievement and career planning. She also led Mi Casa Resource Center for Women advancing self-sufficiency for low income Latinas and youth. She’s been a member of the Faculty at the University of Colorado at Denver and Regis University.
