Scott & White’s New Heartburn and Acid Reflux Center

[HTML1] You may know it as “heartburn,” but it has a more specific name — gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD for short. And on this edition of Your Health Matters, host Christopher Springmann speaks with Dr. F. Paul (Tripp) Buckley about the symptoms and causes of GERD, and how Scott & White has taken this widespread problem very seriously. “GERD is prevalent throughout the population,” says Dr. Buckley, “with almost everybody suffering from heartburn-type symptoms at least once or twice in their life, really over 50 percent of folks suffering it more than once a year. And unfortunately, it’s very common to be on anti-acid medications such as Prilosec, Nexium or Zantac which everyone is familiar with. So because it’s so problematic and prevalent, we’ve tried to come together at Scott & White to bring the specialties that are best able to treat heartburn and/or GERD and, and coordinate the care for the patient.” And what does that look like? “Scott & White’s system already has the great communication, the excellent infrastructure so that the patients can have good coordinated care,” Dr. Buckley tells us. “We can really optimize the time of the patient as well as the physician in getting a good diagnosis and getting them a good treatment plan.”
