After all, that’s how most Americans get their news.

In this segment of Life Love & Health: Special Edition Newsmakers, Executive Producer Christopher Springmann talks with Sandra Miniutti, Marketing Vice President and CFO of Charity Navigator. She calls our attention to the generosity of Americans who, even during a recession year, gave about $300 billion to U.S. charities, primarily non-profits, and mostly in the areas of health and medical, religion, education and the arts. But how can you be sure that your hard-earned dollars are going to the folks who really deserve your money instead of being stuffed into the pockets of a handful of greedy folks who couldn’t care less about what you care most about? “The non-profit sector is a little bit like the wild west,” says Ms. Minuitti. “There’s a whole lot of non-profits. In fact, there’s one million of them. And it could be quite confusing. Many of them have similar sounding names. And so to help donors make informed choices and make sure that they’re getting the biggest bang for their buck, we created Charity Navigator in 2002. And we’re kind of like Consumer Reports or Morningstar for the non-profit sector. So you could really check up on a charity before you make that donation.”
