In today’s episode of Keeping Up with Gen Y, we meet the April Y Gen Cares volunteer, Kara McManus, who volunteers as the communications coordinator for Lights. Camera. Help, an Austin, Texas-based nonprofit dedicated to encouraging other nonprofit and cause-driven organizations to use film and video to tell their stories.
Kara discusses how the Internet has created volunteer opportunities for Gen Y beyond their local communities. She also explains how volunteering in a bad economy not only builds your resume but can open up career possibilities.
More about Kara McManus
For the past two years, Kara McManus has volunteered for Lights. Camera. Help, an Austin, Texas-based nonprofit dedicated to encouraging other nonprofit and cause-driven organizations to use film and video to tell their stories. Earlier this year, she became the organization’s communications coordinator.
In her day job, Kara is program manager for a business development firm as well as a marketing subcontractor. She’s a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, conducting development research, managing databases, marketing through social media, and designing logos and promotional materials for clients.
Majoring in Public Relations, Kara graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 2009. While in school, Kara interned for the Austin Film Festival, another nonprofit organization that furthers the art and craft of filmmaking. Kara’s love for working for non-profits was influenced by her mother, who would encourage her as a young girl to start food and clothing drives to help others less fortunate.
