Girl Talk with Haley Kilpatrick

Someday, maybe there will exist a well-informed, well considered and yet fervent public conviction that the most deadly of all possible sins is the mutilation of a child’s spirit. – Erik Erikson
At age 15 Haley Kilpatrick experienced an event we all go through, the transition from middle school to high school.  For her this experience was a bit more dramatic, for at that very important shift in her life she also shifted from a public school to a private one.  Through this transition Haley was met with ridicule and scorn.  At a time when we, as young women, are really beginning to discover who we are and what we want out of life, she was faced with questioning her own self-worth even more, as she spent her lunch periods eating in the restroom, alone.
For many young women this situation would lead them down an unfavorable path and future.  Haley instead choose to create something positive from it.  Realizing her experience was not unique, but probably being repeated around the country, and around the world, Haley approached her middle school to discuss creating a mentorship program, enabling a positive transition from middle school to high school.  And, thus, Girl Talk was born.
Haley could not have anticipated the positive outcome from that first meeting, or that nine years later it would be in almost every state, as well as opening international chapters.  She had found a key point in our collective experiences as women and was meeting a need that has enabled our future generations of women to better prepare each other for the challenges life will present them.
