[HTML1]Kimberly Ellis, Emerge California’s Executive Director, joins Speak Up! to describe what it takes to encourage women leaders to run for office, and the three biggest objections they raise when asked to run. Emerge California, begun in 2002, was the first in a national movement to address the under-representation of women in elected office at the local, state, and federal levels. Emerge already has a strong record of success:
- Emerge affiliates have trained 540 Democratic women to run for office;
- 37% of their graduates have run for elected office;
- 50% of these candidates have won!
- In 2009, Emerge affiliates filled the pipeline with another 200 well-trained, Democratic women to run for office!
