[HTML1] Laurie Marshall has been on the cutting edge of art as a healing model.
What is happening in our world to day, has no text book answers. Drugs, oil spills, drug war, financial crisis, unemployment and broken family ties all require new solutions.
Laurie’s Singing Tree Project is a model for collaboration and democracy that was inspired by an 8 year old in 1999. This young girl said, “I wish the whole world could see our painting and then the whole would be happy.” That reminded Laurie of a story in the book, The Singing Tree. In Singing Tree, the the author retells her father’s World War I experiences. In this story, his troops were crawling through the dark of night and encountering no living thing, no plant, tree, animal or bird. At dawn they looked out over this barren space and saw one tree filled with birds, birds that were not usually together.
In this new setting, their voices created a new song, a song that had never been heard before.
In The Singing Tree work, a community asks itself, “What needs healing in our community?” By letting the various voices express through art, new solutions have emerged.
