[HTML1]At 4pm on Monday, May 31st, 2010, Memorial Day, at the gateway to the Arlington National Cemetary, women veterans from all branches of service, their friends, family and supporters will gather at the Women In Military Service for America Memorial to honor all women who have served America. One of the leading military leaders of our time, Brigadier General Wilma L. Vaught, USAF Retired, will be there to lead the ceremonies where a woman from each branch of the services will speak – about stories of her service and the services of other women throughout history.
General Vaught is also the President of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. She served in the US Air Force for over 28 years, retiring in 1985 as one of the most highly decorated women in U.S. History. Her leadership did not end with retirement, however. She became the driving force behind the effort to build and operate a $22.5 million memorial to the service and history of more than 2.5 million women veterans. It is the only major national memorial honoring women who have served in our nation’s defense during all eras and in all services. Work on the Memorial was in progress for about 11 years before it was dedicated October 18, 1997. Now, some 200,000 people visit the Memorial annually, and over 235,000 women veterans have registered with the Memorial.
Vaught joins Speak Up! to talk about her service, about how the Memorial was begun and came into existence, and about the purposes and goals of the Memorial, including the preservation of the history of service of women to their country.
