[HTML1] In 2001, with the death of her last remaining grandparent, Lucy Mathews Heegaard began writing songs as a way to preserve and share her family history, with a particular eye towards passing down traditions and memories to her children. Since then, her passion for songwriting and storytelling has grown beyond the realm of her own family. She believes that everyone has a compelling story to tell and loves uncovering long lost tales and hidden gems in anecdotes and conversations with people she meets.
Lucy tells stories through music, prose, photographs and voice. She realizes that music has power to build relationships through conversations with an audience as they relate to personal stories. Lucy’s latest project is her first song recorded in a professional studio. One True Step, was written as she watched friends and friend of friends go through breast cancer, and what that really means. Her creations encourage mindfulness and a space to just breathe, pause and ponder.
“I tell stories that inspire me, that touch me, or that give me pause to reflect on the best of human nature. I do it because I think it helps us all to share our stories—they heal us and connect us in a powerful way. In other words: Hearing your story helps me understand my own. Telling my story helps others understand theirs.”
