[HTML1] The U.N. proclaimed November 25th as a Day to End Violence Against Women and Girls because of the efforts of a movement began in 1981 after the murder, rape and torture of four Sisters from the Maryknoll in El Salvador in 1980.
MamAcoTl, a singer, songwriter speaks to how violence in our homes and communities leaves it mark and changes us.
She was living in an idealist place in Mexico. Every once in a while, authorities would find the body of a women along the highway. It was an example of the violence against women that many accepted and it was very disturbing to her.
She decided to go to the place to sing and heal energy there. As she shared her idea, other musicians said that the government would not give them permission to gather and sing. MamaCoTl gathered hundreds of people on the highway and with song, speech and prayers they focused on healing that area and reclaim the space.
It was an exercise of my own impotence. I realize that you cannot expect the wrong doers to correct their own deeds.
This is the fifth year that MamaCoTl and her friends have created events for the San Francisco Bay to focus on this violence. This year they have activities over a sixteen day period beginning on November 25.
This show poses the question, What can we do to change the cultural stew that is brewing the culture of violence?
